The word "Maranao" means people beside the lake. Lake 'Lanao or Ranao' is the second largest lake in the Philippines and Mindanao's source of hydroelectric power. Beside the lake is the Islamic City of Marawi.

Lanao Lake is very beautiful but sad to say, Lanao del Sur is seldom if never visited by tourists especially christian tourists. Is it because people living here are Muslims? I hope not. Filipino Muslims and Christians are just victims of history. Why not bridge the gap then? It just happens that we are not of the same religion. Thanks the the Philippine government's effort of establishing Mindanao State University, which the primary purpose is the integration of Filipino Muslims and Christians ( http://www.msumain.edu.ph/ ). I graduated at MSU last April 2005.

The view of Marawi City beside the majestic Lake Lanao..

Hi Agido,
I found your website by surfing google. I was looking for some links in regards to Lanao del Sur and Norte.
I created a blog "Buhay Kawayan", an exclusive Pilipino blog among others, with its maiden issue, 'Ang aking simulain'.
Since I have already used your link to substantiate my story I hope you will forgive me for doing so without seeking first your permission.
And if you feel that I have infringed your right, kindly tell me and I will remove it. There is no Commerce involved with my blogging.
Thanks and I'll come to read your write-ups in full. How can I add you as a friend?

hey, I visited your beautiful lake area in 1988. I came there to learn about your culture and traditions. I visited MSU to learn about the art and music.
your people liked me so much they wouldn't let me and my wife leave.
they showed us around various houses around the lake and we ate bangus and when we ran out of food we ate boiled coffee leaves.
In the end they relieved us of my heavy backpack and our heavy recording equipment so we could walk out with our hands free. we swam in the lake and slept in the corn field. what wonderful hospitality!!!
ps. they however, did let me take a cassette of Maranth me.ao and Magindanao music that i was able to record back mwi -

What makes the place not lovable are the people in it. I agree that Marawi is a very dirty place. In my opinion, the local government of the city is not that very strict to implement rules. Marawi City's location is I guess at par with Baguio City as a vacation place for its cool climate. Well, the culture is very different anyway! I doubt if multinational hotel companies will risk to invest in a place like Marawi. The local government of Marawi must do something to improve their city's image.
