Today I am here in Marawi City, The Islamic City of the Philippines. 3 hour trip from Cagayan de Oro City. Being here is somewhat i'm in Saudi Arabia for majority of the locals are Muslims (about 95%) and the culture is very different from the Christian communities. Torogan is a native house among the Maranaos. People living here in Marawi City are "Maranaos," a minority tribe in Mindanao but one of the most educated minorities in the country.

In Bisayan dialect 'torogan' sounds similar with 'tulog,' which means to sleep and in Filipino term as well. It could also be possible that there are also bikolano terms that are borrowed by other local dialects. But how about if we don't have a common language? A big problem indeed. Thanks to Pres. Manual L. Quezon.

I would imagine the house is built off the ground due to flooding. Is this correct?

How are you friend? I wish you happiness all day. This is really a traditional Maranao house. Marawi City and Lanao del Sur is situated high above sea level and the place is colder different from lowlands in Mindanao. So, that is not the primary reason. In the lowland places, yes as a protection against flood. Also, as a traditional Asian life, under the hut are where the chickens are placed that the space below is fenced.
